In 1939 a capsizing accident destroyed an aircraft and as a result the airline was grounded. This is when the company moved to Reykjavik and relaunched in 1940 under the name Flugfélag Íslands. To have a more international brand the airline changed the name to Iceland Airways.

1973 marked the merger of Loftleiðir, an airline based out of Iceland as well, and Flugfélag. It was seen as a beneficial business move due to Iceland's poor economy at the time.

Subsidiaries of IcelandAir Group are Loftleidir-Icelandic, a company that makes aircrafts available for lease internationally as well as IcelandAir Cargo, which specializes in freight cargo.

Icelandair Group offers domestic flights to Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Air Iceland, a member Icelandair Group, is based out of Reykjavík Airport. The airline first operated under Flugfélag Norðurlands. When it merged with IcelandAir Domestic it chose Air Iceland as their new name.

Carla S.

Everything was above board and I had regular communications. It put my mind at ease, although whole process did take about 4 months which was a little longer than I expected. The outcome was in my favour as promised. Well done to ClaimFlights and big thank you.

Smooth process
