Air France Delays / Cancellations Rights

According to EC Regulation 261/2004, on flight delays or cancellations, passengers are entitled to claim compensation, that can be up to 600€ ($700).

So, are you eligible to claim?

The delay should not be because of natural disasters like storm or an earthquake. If the delay or cancellation was due to negligence of Air France airline and the passengers were not given any notice about it then they can go on and file the claim against the airline.

EC Regulation 261/2004 entitles air passengers to claim flight delay compensation and the airline cannot deny it. There are a lot of people who have no idea about how much compensation they can claim for delays or cancellations.

Air France flight passengers can claim up to 600€ (approximately $700) for flights delayed for more than 3 hours, cancelled without prior notice of 2 weeks or if they’re denied to board due to oversold flight tickets or missed the flight connection.

EC Regulation 261/2004 - Air France Flight Delay / Cancellation Compensation

Since Air France and its subsidiaries are European regulated airlines, travelling with them within Europe or away from Europe will be governed by the European Law. Under EU law, as per Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, flight passenger is entitled to claim up to 600€ for delayed or cancelled flights.

This comes into effect only when there is a delay of more than 3 hours or cancelled without any extraordinary circumstances such as extreme bad weather or earthquake or for that matter any natural calamity. If the delay or cancellation was caused due to airlines’ negligence then you should get compensation from the airline.

In cases, flight getting delayed by 2 ½ hours from the scheduled arrival time and it lands on the airport but doesn’t open the door to alight causing a further delay of 30 mins, you can claim compensation from the airlines as it amounts to 3 hours delay in total. And also, if you have booked your tickets with any of these airlines, Air France/ Transavia / HOP! and you face cancellations of their flight without any notice or if their flight delays on arrival for 3 hours or more or if you were involuntarily denied boarding then you can demand compensation from the Air France Airline.

If you are the air passenger travelled with Air France and your flight has been delayed or cancelled (without any prior notice) or for reasons which could have been easily solved then according to Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, Air France flight passengers can claim up to 600€ as flight compensation. This takes into account distance that you travelled both within Europe and Outside Europe and the duration of delay which should be more than 3 hours.

Within EU,

  • If you travel up to 1,500 km or less then you can claim up to 250€
  • And over 1,500 km you can claim up to 400€

Between EU Airport and Non-EU Airport

  • If you travel up to 1,500 km or less then you claim up to 250€
  • If the distance is between 1,500 - 3,500 km then you claim up to 400€
  • And if the distance is more than 3500 km and flight delays for more than 4 hours then you claim up to 600€

Note:If you are travelling to a Non-European country from a Non-European country by a European Flight, EU 261 Rule won’t apply to you. It is only applied in the case of EU based flights travelling within Europe or to or from an EU Member State.

Am I Eligible To Claim Compensation?

EC Regulation 261/2004 is an European Union Regulation, it applies to EU airspace. You do not have to be an EU citizen to claim compensation for delays or cancellations. This means that you can claim on flights departing from any airport located in EU (with any airline) or arriving in the EU (with an EU airline). As Air France is an European Airline, you can claim for any of their flight if delayed for more than 3 hours or cancelled without any notice.
