Turkish Airlines

Turkish airlines is the major airline of Turkey being the national flag carrier and it is the fourth largest airline in the world in terms of number of destinations. Main hub of Turkish Airlines is located at Istanbul Ataturk Airport. Its secondary hubs are located at Esenboga International Airport, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, and Adnan Menderes Airport.

Turkish Airline was established on 20th May 1933 with a different name, which is, State Airlines Administration and was a part of Ministry of National Defence. In the year 1956, the airline was renamed as Turk Hava Yollari A.O. and later became a part of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) around the same period. IATA code of Turkish Airline is TK. Turkish Airlines is Star Alliance member from 1st April 2008.

The aircraft's belonging to Turkish Airline sports a "EuroWhite" livery whose fuselage is in white and has blue lettering while grey tulip runs across, i.e., from wing’s rear to the tail. The fin logo was modified in the year 2010, and now sports white emblem with a red background. The airlines name, i.e. Turkish Airlines, is mentioned on the front left and the front right side of the fuselage.

Turkish Airlines Subsidiaries - Anadolujet & SunExpress

The subsidiaries of Turkish Airlines includes Anadolujet and SunExpress (partly owned i.e., 50%), Turkish Technic and Turkish HABOM.

Anadolujet was established on 23rd April 2008, has its base at Esenboga International Airport in Ankara. Anadolujet operates domestic flights on behalf of its parent company Turkish Airlines.

SunExpress which is also called as Gunes Ekspress Havacılık A.S is based out of Antalya, Turkey and operates standard and chartered flights to various destinations in Europe, Asia and North Africa. SunExpress airline was formed in October 1989 and operated its maiden flight in April of 1990 between Antalya and Frankfurt.

Turkish Airlines Flight Delays / Cancellation / Denied Boarding Problems

Turkish airlines operates flights in 261 worldwide destinations. Turkish airways not only has heavy air passenger traffic but also operates cargo carrier to 47 destinations of the world. Heavy air traffic and cargo load often leads to delays or cancellations of Turkish airline flights. According to EC Regulation 261/2004, passengers travelling with Turkish Airlines should share their experience with the airline and have complete right to claim compensation for any inconvenience caused to them.

EC Regulation 261/2004 EU Air Passenger Rights

EC Regulation 261/2004 (dated 17 February 2005) applies to air passengers departing from any EU airport, or from a non-EU airport with an EU airline to an EU destination. Passengers must note that flight compensation is subject to certain conditions and exceptions. There will be no compensation for a delay / cancellation caused by an extraordinary circumstance, under which such delay / cancellation becomes uncontrollable. An example of such situations includes extreme bad weather or security concerns such as fear of a terror attack. In such situations, passengers will not be given any compensation.

Nevertheless, if there is a delay of more than 4 hours for a flight of 3500 km or more; delay of 3 hours or more in intra-community flight of 1500 km or more; and delay of 3 hours in case of flight under 1500 km, the passenger is entitled to claim compensation under EU norms as set by the Regulation. This entitlement is when the delay is not caused by extraordinary circumstances.

If you travelled with Turkish Airlines and your flight was delayed or cancelled without any prior notice or for reasons which could have been easily avoided by the airline, then according to Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, you can claim compensation up to 600€. This takes into account distance of travel and the delay duration which should be more than 3 hours.

Within EU,

  • If your travel distance is 1,500 km or less then you can claim up to 250€ ($280)
  • Between 1,500 to 3,500 km claimable amount is up to 400€ ($450)

Between EU Airport And Non-EU Airport

  • If you travel up to 1,500 km or less, then you claim up to 250€ ($280)
  • If distance is between 1,500 to 3,500 km, then you claim up to 400€ ($450)
  • And if the distance is more than 3500 km and flight delays for more than 4 hours then you claim up to 600€ ($700)

EC Regulation 261/2004 is a European law, it applies to EU airspace. You do not have to be an EU citizen to claim flight compensation. This means that you can claim on flights departing from any airport located in the EU (with any airline) or arriving in the EU (with an EU airline).
